Brian Cox, famous for his role as Logan Roy in the TV show Succession, recently talked about Johnny Depp’s acting style and why he said no to a part in Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean.
Cox was approached by Disney to play Governor Weatherby Swann in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, but he turned it down. He found the role uninteresting and didn’t want to work with Johnny Depp.
He described the role of Governor Swann as not very fulfilling, and then he shared his thoughts on Johnny Depp’s acting. Cox believed that Depp’s performances, including his famous role in Edward Scissorhands, relied more on his unique appearance than his acting skills. Cox mentioned that Depp’s acting seemed exaggerated and that Depp didn’t need to do much because his distinctive looks did most of the work.
Cox’s comments suggest that he wasn’t impressed with Depp’s unconventional acting style and may have expected similar quirks in Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Ultimately, Cox’s decision to decline the role turned out to be a good one for him.
Even though he turned down Pirates of the Caribbean, Brian Cox continued to have a successful acting career, appearing in various notable films such as The Ring, Adaptation, 25th Hour, Troy, and The Bourne Supremacy. Many of these movies have become modern classics, further enhancing Cox’s reputation as a talented actor.
In the end, Brian Cox’s choice not to be part of Pirates of the Caribbean allowed him to take on other roles and establish himself as a respected actor. Johnny Depp’s unique acting style has received both praise and criticism.
