Leo‘s box office numbers are coming in, and as expected, it has broken the opening day records for Tamil cinema. It made over Rs. 75 crore on its first day in India, which might go up to Rs. 80 crore when final numbers are calculated. The overseas earnings, including previews, are estimated to be around USD 7.50-8 million, making Leo’s global opening day earnings about Rs. 140 crore.
Before Leo, the movie “2.0” had the highest opening day earnings in India and worldwide, with Rs. 70 crore and Rs. 94 crore, respectively. Leo is expected to surpass the worldwide record by almost 50%, but in India, the margin is smaller due to the contribution of the Hindi version of “2.0” in North India, which Leo doesn’t have.
In South India, Leo has set new opening day records in Kerala and Karnataka, with Kerala earning Rs. 11.50 crore on its first day. Tamil Nadu may also set a new record, but we’ll know for sure tomorrow. Leo has outperformed “Beast,” the previous record holder in regular showings, although “Beast” had the advantage of starting shows as early as 4 AM and playing up to six shows a day, while Leo started at 9 AM with a limit of five shows a day.
In the Telugu states, Leo couldn’t break the “2.0” record due to competition with the Telugu film “Bhagwant Kesari.” If it had a solo release, it could have surpassed “2.0.”
Vijay Leo has seen huge advance bookings for the Dussehra weekend, and with the Dusshera holiday on the first two weekdays, it’s expected to continue its record-breaking run at the box office.
