The e-rickshaw industry has experienced significant growth in India due to its widespread usage. Electric rickshaws, also known as three-wheelers, have gained popularity as a cost-effective means of transportation for daily commutes. In India, the two-wheeler category is more preferred over three-wheeler or four-wheeler segments. Nevertheless, a considerable number of e-rickshaws still ply on India’s highways, using either lead-acid or lithium-ion batteries.
Back in the late 1990s, the Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute took one of the earliest initiatives to develop electric rickshaws, and it wasn’t until around 2011 that they gained significant recognition. Presently, nearly 60 million Indians rely on e-rickshaws daily, making it the world’s second-largest fleet of electric vehicles.
