Meta introduced a feature called Reels on Instagram in 2020 to compete with the popular short-video app TikTok. Instagram Reels lets users make videos up to 60 seconds long, and these videos are featured on the Instagram Explore Page. These short videos, inspired by TikTok, have become Meta’s fastest-growing content format and allow creators to earn ad revenue. Now, Instagram is letting users download Reels that others have posted through Stories, so they can watch them later or share them with friends outside the app. Here’s how you can download Instagram Reels on Android or iPhone.
How to Download an Instagram Reel
- Downloading Instagram Reels with Stories is a neat little trick, and you don’t need some extra app or software.
- Fire up the Instagram app on your Android or iOS phone.
- Find the Reel you want to save and tap the Share icon.
- Add the Reel to your story.
- Zoom in on the preview and tap the three-dot menu up top, then hit Save.
- Get rid of the story.
You can get to the downloaded Reel from your camera roll, and it won’t have the Instagram watermark. It’ll show the user’s name instead.
Some Important Points to Know
- Right now, you can only download Reels from public accounts. Private Instagram accounts don’t let you do this.
- People with public accounts can turn off the ability to download their Reels in the app settings.
Additional Information
Back in June, the head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, said that folks in the US could download Reels from public accounts straight to their camera roll. Before that, people could share Reels from public accounts in their Stories or through chat by hitting the share button and choosing the Download option. You’ll see the Download option down at the bottom menu, along with Add to Story, Share, and Copy Link, just like in the picture that Mosseri shared.
